Influence of preservation methods on biochemical composition and downstream processing of cultivated Saccharina latissima biomass

Saccharina latissima biomass cultivated along the Swedish west coast was subjected to four different scalable preservation methods after harvest; freezing, sun-drying, oven-drying and ensiling. Freeze-drying freezing at ?80 °C were also included provide dry wet references. The effects of on composition (on weight, DW, basis), recovery as well properties high-quality protein, alginate biogas evaluated. Sun-drying significantly reduced fatty acid content seaweeds thereby concentrated ash in compared other methods. Protein/amino acids ensiled biomass, while mannitol laminarin biomasses. Oven-drying ?20 affected least, with lower alterations some specific amino acids. ensiling resulted protein solubility high pH biomasses which translated into lowest total seaweed using pH-shift process. Highest yield obtained freeze-dried reference. Ensiling lead a significant decrease molecular weight alginate, sun-drying caused negative effect by inducing shift guluronic mannuronic alginate. gave methane anaerobic digestion experiments highest yield, closely followed To conclude, must be carefully chosen protect valuable component latissima, achieve an efficient downstream processing ultimately yielding quality products part biorefinery.
